After Bone Grafting

Your bone graft may be made of bone particles—you may notice them in your mouth the first few days after the graft. Here's how to take care of yourself during this time.

There are some habits you can implement to minimize the number of particles that become dislodged.

  • Try not disturb or touch the grafting site with your hands or tongue
  • Avoid rinsing or spitting for 48 hours to allow for the graft material to stabilize
  • Do not use an electric toothbrush adjacent to the graft site for 48 hours
  • Do not smoke for at least 7 days

Diet

A soft diet for five days is key to keeping a graft undisturbed. We recommend only liquids for the rest of the day after surgery. Your food intake may be limited for the first few days. Compensate for this by increasing your fluid intake — at least 6-7 glasses of liquid should be taken daily. Try not to miss a single meal. You will feel better, have more strength, less discomfort and heal faster if you continue to eat.
